Tsunami swimmers had several great swims with new team records set at the 2014 Long Course Virginia Swimming Age Group Champs meet held July 24-27 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

LONDON – Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers won gold Monday in the 2012 Olympic Swimming competition, takingMissy Franklin (medium)the women’s and men’s 100m backstroke. Franklin’s time of 58.33 was an American record. Grevers’ time of 52.16 was an Olympic record.

American swimmers won a total of four medals on the third night of competition at the Aquatic Center, with Nick Thoman and Rebecca Soni picking up a pair of silvers in the men’s 100m back and the women’s 100m breaststroke.

That brings Team USA’s medal tally in the pool to 12 – four gold, five silver and three bronze.

Also worth noting is that with the Americans’ four medals tonight, the United States has won a total of 500 Olympic medals in the pool since the advent of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. The next closest team, Australia, has accumulated a total of 153 medals after Monday night.

LDana Vollmer (medium)ONDON – Dana Vollmer won the United States Olympic Swimming Team’s second gold medal of the meet and set a world record Sunday in the finals of the women’s 100m butterfly, turning in a time of 55.98.

It was one of four medals for Team USA on the second night of competition. Allison Schmitt took silver and set an American record in the women’s 400m freestyle; Brendan Hansen took bronze in the men’s 100m breaststroke; and Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones and Ryan Lochte took silver in the men’s 4x100m free relay.

Sunday’s effort brought the Americans’ record count in the pool to eight – 2 gold, three silver and three bronze.

Women’s 100m Butterfly
Vollmer, the reigning world champion in the 100m butterfly, made no secret of her goal to smash the 56-second barrier in that event, and she finally pulled it off in Sunday’s finals.

LONDON - Ryan Lochte won the United States Olympic Team's first gold medal of the 2012 Games Saturday,Ryan Lochte (medium)taking the men’s 400m IM with a time of 4:05.18. It was one of four medals for the U.S. on the first night of competition.

Also winning medals for Team USA were Elizabeth Beisel with a silver in the women's 400m IM and Peter Vanderkaay with a bronze in the men’s 400m freestyle. Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt also won a bronze and set an American record in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.
